Seam-Shifted Wake can give you more movement without increasing spin.

SSW has become a common term in the game, as evidenced by how often it has been used in TV broadcasts and interviews. Here are a few examples:

Prior to starting as a consultant in 2021, I worked with Alex Wood, Clay Holmes, and Brenan Hanife (currently of the Tigers).

Though my experiences, I have gained considerable knowledge of:

  1. Actionable knowledge on the effect of grips on SSW
  2. How SSW pitches play compared to conventional pitches
  3. Baseball measurement systems, including HawkEye (Statcast), Trackman, Rapsodo and High-speed video

Pitch Grip Assessments

You’ve got velocity and command, now let’s work on your stuff! I have unique expertise to help you take advantage of Seam-Shifted Wake by learning how your grips cause the seams to contribute to movement, or not. During an assessment bullpen, we will measure :

  1. Velocity
  2. Spin Rate
  3. Spin axis
  4. Gyro (Spin efficiency)
  5. Movement
  6. Plate Location
  7. Slowmo Video of release and seam orientation

Based on the assessment pen, I will provide:

  1. Edited video from the high-speed camera and from Rapsodo (or Pitchlogic) of each of your pitches, showing your grip, your release, and how the ball moves. This video will be available to you via the cloud.
  2. A Rapsodo report, showing your current pitch movement, or shape. An example is shown at left.
  3. Rapsodo CSV. Click here for example.
  4. Recommendations for changes to grips and/or additional pitches, with comps to MLB pitchers.
  5. Click here for an example report.

On a later date, we can schedule a second pen focused on pitch design, where we will implement these changes and assess the results. I will deliver the same type of report as the assessment pen with additional before/after analysis.

Data Analysis

Do you have a Trackman or Rapsodo report you don’t know what to make of? Or high-speed video of your pitch release? I can help you better understand what they tell you.

Team BP

I can visit your practice facility and measure hitting metrics during BP. Report provides exit velocity, launch angle and OPS as a function of where the pitch lands in the zone.

Equipment

Rapsodo Pro 2.0 Pitching and Hitting — the latest from Rapsodo

Measures:

  • Pitching
    • Velocity
    • Spin direction
    • RPM
    • Spin efficiency (gyro)
    • Horizontal and Vertical break (Measured, not inferred)
    • Plate location
    • Release Point
  • Hitting
    • Exit velocity
    • Launch angle
    • Spin
    • Predicted Outcome (hit, out, homerun, etc)

High Speed Video

Video acquired at 500 fps from directly behind your release point will reveal:

  1. The details of your release from the ball
  2. Seam orientation
  3. Independent spin direction and gyro

Pitch Logic

F5 sports produces these instrumented baseballs that measure velocity and spin metrics, like Rapsodo, but also provides information on arm slot and seam orientation. We will use it to cross-check Rapsodo and provide some interesting information that the Pro2 cannot.
